Kitchen Remodeling in Maryland: What Does It Actually Cost in 2026?

Precision Custom Woodwork & RemodelingFebruary 14, 20266 min read

Every homeowner who calls us starts with the same question: how much is this going to cost? The honest answer is it depends, but that's not helpful when you're trying to plan a budget. So let me break down what we're actually seeing in the Maryland market right now, with real numbers from jobs we've completed.

Cosmetic Refresh: $15,000 to $30,000

This is the route for kitchens that have good bones. The layout stays the same. You're updating the face of the kitchen, not ripping it apart.

New cabinet doors run about $3,000 to $8,000 depending on if you are choosing painted shaker doors or stained wood. New hardware adds $500 to $1,500. Countertops, whether quartz or solid surface, land in the $4,000 to $8,000 range. A fresh backsplash with good tile is $2,000 to $3,500. Paint throughout is $1,500 to $2,500. Some appliance upgrades, usually the range and microwave since those show most, run $3,000 to $5,000. Flooring if you just do the kitchen area, $2,000 to $4,000.

This approach works great in Anne Arundel County homes where the kitchen layout is already efficient. You're not fighting against the bones of the house. The big limitation is you're stuck with whatever plumbing and electrical are already there. If your sink is in a bad spot, or you only have one outlet, this tier won't fix it.

Mid-Range Remodel: $30,000 to $60,000

This is where most of our projects fall. You're getting new cabinets, new appliances, new counters, and some flexibility on layout.

New cabinetry from a quality semi-custom builder runs $12,000 to $25,000 depending on linear footage and materials. We're talking plywood boxes, solid wood doors, and finishes that'll last. Countertops upgraded to something like quartz or butcher block run $6,000 to $12,000. Appliances, a full set, run $5,000 to $12,000. New flooring throughout the kitchen and maybe into the adjacent dining area, $4,000 to $8,000. A proper backsplash and tile work, $2,500 to $4,000. Permits and inspection fees in Anne Arundel or Montgomery counties typically cost $800 to $1,500.

At this level, you can usually rearrange the sink or add an island if the space allows. You might move a doorway or adjust an electrical panel location. You're not relocating plumbing lines across the room, but minor adjustments are possible. You get real cabinet construction with dovetail drawers and quality hinges. The countertops are properly templated and installed. Appliances are standard commercial-grade, not builder-grade.

The typical timeline is 10 to 14 weeks from start to finish. That includes design, ordering, permit time, and installation.

Full Gut Renovation: $60,000 to $120,000 Plus

This is for kitchens that need structural work. Moving walls, relocating plumbing, new electrical, completely custom everything.

Custom cabinetry built to your exact specifications runs $20,000 to $40,000 or more. We're talking wood species selected specifically, drawer configurations that match your needs, finishing that integrates with the rest of your home. High-end countertops, stone or premium quartz, run $10,000 to $18,000. Premium appliances, $8,000 to $15,000. Custom-built islands or special features add another $5,000 to $15,000. Flooring and tile work, $6,000 to $12,000. Plumbing relocations, electrical upgrades, and structural work, $8,000 to $20,000. Permits and inspections, $1,200 to $2,000.

At this level, you're matching your kitchen to the architectural style of your home. In Gambrills or Annapolis, we work with homes with original trim and built-ins, and the kitchen needs to look like it belongs there, not like someone dropped in a builder kitchen from 2005. That custom work takes time and skill.

The timeline stretches to 14 to 20 weeks. The lead times on quality materials are longer. The work is more involved. The inspections happen at multiple stages.

What Drives Cost in Maryland Specifically

Labor costs here are high because the work is skilled and the cost of living is high. A good carpenter or plumber in Anne Arundel County costs more than someone in rural Pennsylvania, and that gets built into estimates.

Permits are another Maryland-specific cost. Anne Arundel and Montgomery counties require permits for most kitchen work. The permit process takes time, and inspectors need to come out. Budget two to four weeks for this alone. Some counties move faster than others.

Supply chains affect how long you wait for cabinets. If you order stock cabinets from a national distributor, lead time might be six weeks. If you order from a semi-custom builder, eight to twelve weeks. Custom work from our shop, that's custom-built, so 12 to 16 weeks depending on the complexity and our current workload.

The Hidden Costs People Forget

Nobody budgets for the temporary kitchen setup. If you live in the house during renovation, you need a microwave, a hot plate, a cooler, and somewhere to eat. Budget $500 to $1,500 for rental equipment and eating out more than usual.

Dumpster rental for debris runs $400 to $800 for a 30-day dumpster depending on size. You'll generate a lot of trash tearing out old cabinets, flooring, backsplash.

Dust containment. If you want to keep your living room from turning into a disaster, temporary walls and a plastic dust barrier cost $500 to $1,500. It's worth it.

Unexpected discoveries behind the walls. This is the scary one. You open up the wall expecting one thing and find old plumbing that needs replacement, knob and tube wiring that's a code violation, or framing issues. Always, always hold 15 to 20 percent of your budget as contingency. On a $50,000 project, that's $7,500 to $10,000 sitting there for surprises.

Custom Cabinet Work vs. Big-Box

There's a fundamental difference between what we build in our shop and what comes from a big-box store or even a national cabinet company. Stock cabinets have particle board boxes, melamine interiors, and frame-and-panel doors that are veneered. They're designed to be cheap and fast to produce.

Custom woodworking starts with plywood or solid wood boxes, real wood interiors, dovetail drawers, and quality hinges that cost three times what the cheap ones do. The finish is applied to solid wood, not melamine, so it ages better and repairs better. When you need to fit a cabinet into a 32 and a half inch space because your kitchen is 65 inches and you need two 16 and a quarter inch cabinets, custom gets you exactly that. Stock won't.

For kitchen remodeling in Anne Arundel County, understanding these tiers helps you make decisions. You don't need full custom for everything. You might do semi-custom cabinets and quality countertops on a mid-range budget. Or you might do stock cabinets and save the custom work for built-in bookshelves in the adjacent dining room.

The cost comes down to complexity, materials, and timeline. We can work at any of these levels. The question is what makes sense for your house, your budget, and what's important to you. That's the conversation we have when you call.
