Built-In Entertainment Centers vs. Store Bought: Why Custom Wins

Precision Custom Woodwork & RemodelingFebruary 14, 20267 min read

We get asked a lot about entertainment centers because people see the IKEA or Crate & Barrel options and think, why would I spend more on custom work? Fair question. Let me break down what you're actually choosing between.

Store-Bought Entertainment Centers

There are real advantages to going with a store-bought unit from IKEA Besta, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Wayfair, or whoever. I'm not going to pretend there aren't.

The upfront cost is lower. A Besta system might run $800 to $1,500 fully assembled. A Pottery Barn unit maybe $1,200 to $2,500. You can buy it this week and set it up next week. That's attractive.

The other advantage is simplicity. You don't need to hire anyone. You get instructions, you follow them, and you're done. No meetings, no waiting for custom work, no installation labor cost.

Here's what happens after that, though.

Most store-bought entertainment centers are made from particleboard with veneer. The construction is inherently loose. Shelves flex under the weight of a TV and equipment. Hinges wear out. Doors stop closing properly. The veneer starts peeling or showing wear in high-traffic areas. You're looking at a 5-7 year lifespan before the unit looks tired and you're thinking about replacing it.

Standard sizes leave gaps. Your wall is 12 feet wide but the Besta system is 8 feet. Now you have empty space on one side or you need to buy multiple units and they don't line up perfectly. Or the depth is 20 inches but your wall has a baseboard that sticks out 4 inches and now it doesn't sit flush.

Wire management is an afterthought. Cables just run behind the unit or get shoved into pre-made holes that don't actually match your equipment layout.

Storage and shelving are locked into whatever configurations the manufacturer decided. You have an odd-shaped wall or specific equipment you need to accommodate? Too bad. You work within their design or you don't buy it.

And here's something that matters more than people think: when you sell the house, a store-bought entertainment center is furniture. It goes with you or the next owner throws it out. It doesn't increase your home's value the way built-in cabinetry does.

Custom Built-In Entertainment Centers

Now let's talk about doing this as a custom built-in.

A custom unit is sized exactly to your wall. If you have a 13-foot-6 wall with a soffit that drops down 24 inches at one end, we build around it. No gaps, no filler pieces, just custom proportions for your space.

The equipment layout is designed around what you actually have. Maybe you need cable runs in specific places. Maybe your TV is bigger than average and you need support planning around that. Maybe you want a soundbar mounted above the TV and you need cabinetry that accommodates it. We plan for your actual situation, not a generic one.

Material quality is completely different. We're working with real plywood construction, hardwood veneer, or if you want painted finishes, quality MDF or poplar. Shelves don't flex. Hinges are quality hardware from brands like Blum that are rated for 20,000 cycles or more. Doors close smoothly. We're building something that will still look good in 15 years.

Wire management is part of the design. We run conduit where you need it, mount equipment brackets in the right places, and build in vents so your equipment doesn't overheat. The whole system actually works.

Flexible configuration is possible. Maybe you want adjustable shelves on one section and fixed shelves on another. Maybe you want some open display space and some closed storage for media or equipment. Maybe you want glass-front doors on the TV section and solid doors on the storage. We can do any combination that makes sense.

And when you sell? A custom built-in entertainment center is part of the house. It adds value because it's built-in, it's quality, and it shows that someone invested in the home.

Cost Comparison

Let me be direct about what this actually costs.

A basic store-bought system: $1,000 to $2,500 for the unit itself. You might add installation if you don't DIY, so maybe $500 to $1,000 more if you're hiring someone just to assemble it.

A custom built-in entertainment center: The range is pretty wide depending on complexity, but a basic wall-to-wall unit with TV space, some open shelving, and maybe a couple of storage sections runs about $4,000 to $7,000. A higher-end unit with quality wood finishes, integrated lighting, closed cabinetry, adjustable shelving, and more detailed design work runs $8,000 to $15,000 or more.

So yeah, you're spending more upfront. But you're getting a product that lasts 3 to 4 times longer, it's perfectly scaled to your space, and it's part of your home value.

When Store-Bought Actually Makes Sense

I want to be honest here because there are situations where custom built-in work doesn't make sense.

If you're renting and you can't modify the walls, a store-bought unit is your only option. Obviously.

If you know you're moving in two years, don't spend $8,000 on built-in cabinetry. Buy a $1,500 unit, use it while you're there, and leave it or sell it. You won't recover the cost of custom work in that timeline.

If your space is standard dimensions and you're okay with a standard layout, and budget is tight, a store-bought system is perfectly fine. Not everyone needs custom work.

If the rest of your home isn't that finished and you're trying to be strategic about what to invest in, maybe hold off on custom entertainment cabinetry until you've taken care of other priorities.

For rental properties where you're trying to minimize costs and maximize turnover, stick with builder-grade or store-bought everything. Custom work doesn't pencil out.

When Custom is Worth It

Custom built-in entertainment centers make sense when a few things are true.

You're planning to stay in the home for at least five to ten years. The longer you're there, the more the investment pays back to you in daily quality of life and eventual resale value.

Your space is odd-shaped, has specific challenges, or has equipment needs that don't fit standard solutions. That's exactly what custom work solves.

You want the living room to look intentional and finished. A custom unit that's sized perfectly to the wall and matches the rest of your trim and finishes does that.

Your home is in a strong real estate market where quality cabinetry and built-in work are valued by buyers. If you're in Annapolis, Silver Spring, or Ellicott City, that's the case.

You want your media equipment and cables hidden and organized. Custom work lets you do that cleanly.

The Long-Term View

Here's what I'd say if you were sitting in my shop.

A store-bought entertainment center is a consumable. It's going to look worn in five to seven years and you'll probably want something different.

A custom built-in is a permanent installation. It's part of your home. It works better, looks better, and it's still functional 15 years later.

If you're staying in your home and you have the budget, custom built-in work for your living room or main media space is worth doing right. It's one of those things that pays dividends every day through ease of use and how the room feels, plus it adds real value when you eventually sell.

We've built a lot of these across Maryland and I can tell you the difference between a home with thoughtfully designed built-in media storage and one with a big box store unit is noticeable to buyers and appraisers. It reads as a more finished house.

If you want to talk through what a custom entertainment center or media built-in would look like in your space, or if you're considering whether it's the right move for you, let's chat. We'd be happy to walk through the options and costs.
